100 days of what makes me happy, in photographs. Day 16: Dandelions; beautiful resilience.

While on my walk today, I came upon a dandelion and considered the resilience of such a misunderstood flower. How it stretches toward the sun despite the concrete jungle that surrounds it, or the futile attempts of mankind to render it lifeless. A perfect yard in todays society often does not allow for such a transformative flower. Its brilliant yellow bloom and deep abiding roots is not welcome in a sea of perfectly coifed green grass. No difference is allowed, so much like society at large. Often we try to snuff out what is not familiar, or similar, before we even consider the beauty of individuality. Such strength of individuality does not easily succumb, much like the dandelion it transforms and and continues to flourish despite the threats to conform or perish.
We need to be more accepting, and we need to lift each other up to become more resilient. Let us spread empathy like the dandelion seeds that scatter in the breeze.

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
